40K Nationals 2018 Deployments and Objectives

Hey everyone,

With the first month of polls completed and feedback provided the judges have decided we should put up a poll to consider the deployments and objective placement rules that we want to use at Nationals this year. We have had some people agree with the current set deployments and objective placement restrictions, but we have also had some resistance to this idea and some good suggestions made as alternatives.

As such please vote and discuss here on which you would prefer. This poll will be run for the month of June and we will make our decision at the end as to which way we will deploy and place objectives at that point. Your options are:
Leave the deployment and objective placement as it is presented in the current rule pack;
Have set deployments as in the rules pack, but allow players to place their objectives before the game following the current restrictions (only on the floor level of ruins and terrain);
Have set deployments as in the rules pack, but allow players to place their own objectives before the game with only the rulebook restrictions;
Have the TO roll for the deployment used before each round, players set their objectives using the current restrictions (only on the floor level of ruins and terrain);
Have the TO roll for the deployment used before each round, players set their objectives using only rulebook restrictions

I would say that the 2nd and 3rd ways are least desirable as knowing the deployment beforehand can skew placement a bit especially considering who gets to pick the deployment area. However please do discuss and cast your vote for us to know.

Comment about the last 2 options. Is the TO rolling for deployment before or after all objectives have been placed? It is not clear from above. If its before objectives then those options are pretty much the same as options 2 and 3.

They are rolling after the objectives have been placed, as you are correct that it would be pretty much the same otherwise.

I really think that leaving all objective placement to the TO's reduces tactical complexity. Your opponent would place his objectives to benefit his army well you would do the same with yours

AfkFanatic - the problem with that is in a tournament with set deployment systems it gives a massive advantage to the person placing the last objective as they also get to pic their deployment zone. Usually this is counteracted by the fact that you place objectives before knowing the deployment map for the game so while you can help yourself with clever placement of the last objective it isn't based on perfect information.

In a tournament your information on the deployment system in use for the game is perfect and this seems like too big an advantage to the person placing the last objective for it to be decided on a single roll of the dice before the game has even begun.
You know those times when you wish you could think of something funny or interesting to say, but just can't... yeah, this is one of those times.

Q21 - we picked this up in CT too.

Found it to be too powerful and as a result, the regionals here houseruled that we roll for both placement of objectives and deployment zones separately to equalize this.

Just because the TO has rolled for deployment does not mean people need to know deployment types before placing markers.
It should be really easy to define a process that negates this:
Say the game is set to start at 9:00
From 9:00 to 9:05 players place their markers.
At 9:05 TO rolls for deployment and announces.
Players either use normal rules for determining who gets to pick deployment side or they roll for it
Game continues as normal
