Wednesday Night Wargames - Saga

Some pix of a Saga game played at a Peninsula Wargames Group meeting last night - Normans vs Scots @ 6pts. The scenario was "The Challenge" - in which the two warlords start the game facing each other at close quarters in the middle of the table, and their forces begin on the table edges. (For those unfamiliar with Saga, the significance of this is that in most games of Saga, the game ends when your warlord dies. While he is your most powerful single figure, he also deserves a fair amount of protection.)

In fluff terms, it was clear that the Normans had stolen a march on the Scots, because the battlefield was ideal for archers and cavalry - both of which the Normans have in abundance... The Scots were forced to fight in tight shieldwalls, as their few horseman soon died to the hail of arrows and bolts. But the majority of the Scots units survived, and a defensive deployment by the Normans ended in their Warlord being trapped amongst his weaker warriors and peasant archers...

Again for those who dont know much about Saga, its activation is based around a dice economy. The number and type of units on the table generate a number of special Saga dice which are rolled at the beginning of each players' turn, and which are then, depending on the dice results, used for activating units or performing faction-specific combat actions. These are indicated on a "battle board". In the pic below you can see my opponent busy populating his board - the "Orders" Phase.

The shield markers indicate fatigued units - a unit may activate as many times in a turn as you have dice to spend, but each movement or combat creates fatigue, which can be "spent" by your opponent to limit the units effectiveness.

(This last pic is from a game we played earlier this year, but is very evocative of the game and the era.)

Thanks. Some glamour shots of the Scots are here and their pious allies here.

Very nice. I really like the muted use of colours and the limited palette that holds the band together. That banner is epic too :)

On a bit of a Saga binge at the moment. These pix are from a 6pt Scots vs Anglo-Saxons game last night. The scenario was "The Escort"... one player has to get a baggage train across the table... The death of a warlord ends the game, but unless the baggage train objectives are complete, the game then is declared a draw. So the moment it looks like you will lose on objectives, killing the opponent's warlord becomes a viable strategy to snatch a draw. In the end it played out as a horrible slaughter as both sides attempted an attrition game, in order to reduce the number of order dice held by their enemy.
