Soviet Armoured Company - Help

Postby Charles » Fri Dec 09, 2016 9:07 am

Hi Guys,

I would appreciate some help with building an Soviet Armoured company , I am looking for some ideas to for the Heavy Tanks or should I just go light T34's and more T34's

Maybe looking at getting the Statlin's Bears (IS-2 (x6), T34(x4), ISU-122(x4) ) as base. I do have 10 T34's at the moment.

Help will be much appreciated.

IS-series and T-34s are two quite different forces.

For the IS-series you take about seven (HQ, 3, 3) and then load up on support. By support I mean Reconnaissance first, then whatever you like. Air support is useful here, and if you field IS-2s then a lighter tank unit of 6+ T-34s is a good support option to deal with thing you don't want to waster you IS-2s on.

The IS-85 can deal adequately with opposing mediums, but suffers against heavy opposition (Tigers, Panthers, King Tigers, etc.). The IS-2 with its AT15 gun can hurt Panthers and the like, but with RoF1 you will struggle to out-shoot most opponents. Both vehicles are actually better against infantry than opposing tanks (as they're assault monsters), but can deal with with opposing armour, they're just not that great at it: they're all-rounders, and a specialist tank-killer like the Panther can be an issue. However, both have very good frontal armour so can take a lot of punishment. You cannot mix IS-2 and IS-85s, for the record.

T-34s are a different animal: they need a certain amount of mass to be effective. IMO you need minimum 17 hulls: an HQ Tank and 2x Companies of 8-tanks each. Going to full 21 hulls (1+10+10) is an option, but only if you're running regular Tankovy with mixed 76s and 85s.

Tankovy in Red Bear can have either Guards (all T-34/85, and Always Attack) or regular (up to half T-34/85). If you go Guards, the cost adds up quite quickly, but all have decent FA7 and a good AT12 gun: here is the only way I would go with a few less hulls, running HQ+8+6 for 15 hulls is decent enough. However, Guards are Always Attack, so you will be forced to attack most opposition which is a definite learning curve.

If you mix T-34/76s and 85s, you can fob-off hits onto the 76s sometimes to save the more valuable 85s. It is always the 85mm guns that will do the heavy lifting against opposig tanks. Aginst infantry and Guns, the 76 are just as good, and can kill most things with flank shots. They also have Wide Tracks, making them better at crossing and assaulting-into terrain. Taking mixed companies also freesup point for more support, at the expense of having fewer 85mm shots in your combat companies.

As models come with both turrets, you can swap between forces quite easily and go all-85s or a mix of 76s and 85s to see what you like.

Stalin's Bears is a decent box: you ideally need one more IS-tank to get seven vehicles (you can buy a single direct from Battlefront). The ISU-122 is also a very good all-rounder with an AT15 gun and Volley Fire which can work-over infantry very well once it gets going. It also has FA9 so is hardly weak. Most of the support can switch between lists, so really getting 7-odd IS-tanks and then a few more T-34s is not a bad idea.
