Just off the painting table (updated 02/05/17)

Postby Golf Alpha Zulu » Mon Apr 18, 2016 7:58 am

A few transports that I have completed over the last little while: A civilian Ford/Gaz AA for my partisans, a Schwimmwagen for my Heer, and another jeep for my South Africans. The Gaz and the Jeep are from Warlord Games, and the Schwimmwagen is from Company B...

Been gaming more than painting of late, so have not been very productive. But have finally got a pair of A15 Crusaders done - one from Rubicon Models and the other from Blitzkrieg Miniatures. My first attempts at desert war colours/patterns...

Very nice! :)
I love the desert war colours. These are going to look great in action on the table.

Only for training. Never in combat.

Trivia: When the training vehicles were replaced by Shermans (just before the division shipped to the front in Italy), all the Crusaders were sent from Egypt (where the training happened) back to South Africa, where they were used for... nothing. There are to this day more A15 Crusaders in South Africa - in museums, in private collections, and as monuments outside Moth Halls – than anywhere else on the planet...

you get a +1 for that interesting fact!

Do you know if the SA divisions used them in combat in Tunisia? Even if "reclaimed"?

Don't think so. My understanding is the 1st SA were pulled out of the line and demobbed after El Alamein (1942) and the 2nd SA had pretty much ceased to exist after the fall of Tobruk. The idea was then to get everyone (except the garrison troops in Madagascar - can't recall the unit) back to SA and reform them into a single Armoured division - the 6th.

The assumption was that the 6th would fight in Tunisia, and that is the terrain they trained for, but by the time they were combat ready the North African campaign was over, and Jannie Smuts instead committed them to Italy (after jumping through a few political hurdles, as the oath of service declared by UDF servicemen at that time limited them to duty on the African continent...)

So no Saffa combat units made it to Tunisia. There were however plenty of Saffa signals, engineers, and medics units attached to the 8th army - all through the African campaign and into Italy. And of course plenty of Saffas fighting as British citizens in the 8th Army.

Ja, the 1st fought in East Africa, and then, off the top of my head, at Sidi Rezeg, Sollum, Mersa Mutrah, Bardia (maybe, that might have been 2nd) Gazala, El Alamein x 2.

New transport for my landsers... yes, I know it doesnt even have an engine, but its better than carrying your kit as you march across the steppe... And a few MPs to throw a red tape roadblock in their way...

Both natural enemies of my partisans...
