Bloody Tarawa

Again, a few pix from a PWG monthly Saturday meet: this time a linked pair of games on 6 x 4ft tables representing two of the beaches on Betio Island, during the US landings at Tarawa in late 1943. Based on the scenario rules in the Bolt Action "Empires in Flames" theatre supplement, but with some umpire-driven tweaks that kept both sides on their toes...

On each table were 6000pts of forces - 4000pts for the attackers and 2000pts for the defenders, who had the benefit of prepared defences - minefields, bunkers, trenchlines, spider holes, hidden units, and blind deployment. 11 players and 1 umpire; 7 hours of gaming; and the result was the slightest of victories for the US.

Again, despite its idiosyncrasies, Bolt Action delivers a well-balanced game with a plausible historical outcome. And a lot of fun.

For those interested, more pix and the umpires AAR can be seen on the Small Wars blog
