I just wanted to boast and gloat a bit

Postby Captain Sensible » Thu May 24, 2018 12:32 pm

yeah, so after 7 years of space marines and trying to paint em pretty, it left me very drained of hobby mojo.

Then, in a fit of rebellious rage I decided that when I got some spare cash to start a 2nd army for 40k. My mission to have an army that gave me slightly different gameplay to space marines, and one that I could paint fast. I read over many codices, checked out variances in game play, and most importantly checked the price tags involved. Then I looked over you tube for how to paint fast tutorials and got the stuff I'd need paint wise.

I chose death guard as it was the only army that checked off all requirements, have elite foot sloggers as well as a horde style game play. If I make a mess in painting, its par for the course. Plus space zombies. And starter set included. Its just so full of win it was a no brainer. So to speak.

Youtube tutorials stopped me wasting time trying to figure out colour scheme and what order to do what colours in and making up my mind poring over the bottles of paint. GW spraypaint with the deatguard green saved me a crapton of time and effort after i tried doing it with a brush and paint pot. Also, GW primer has acetone in it, which melts the paint into styrene the model is made of and also hastens curing time. AWESOME, and well worth the extra coin it might seem to cost. What took me 2 hours by brush took 3 minutes by spraycan. On larger surfaces like the vehicles, the even coating of the spray really pays off compared to the inevitable streaking the brush delivers.

Basing I used a simple texture paint, followed by a single highlight drybrushing. I topped it off with GW tuft grasses, which may seem costly up front, but when you see that a single box will comfortably base a 2k+ army, its well worth it. Simply peel off the sheeting and pop it onto the base. That's all there is to it. No dipping, no drying time, no brushing and fluffing like the static grass either. And it looks more grass like. It gets 2 thumbs up from me.

I also planned around the easter long weekend and other long weekends to put in a bit of extra time on those days off.

I succeeded in painting up 4k worth of death guard within 2 months. They're satisfying to look at for me, and they're a gaming, NOT a display army. I am well chuffed with them.

Take from this true story what you will. There's some tactics in here that may well help you with your plasticrack choices in future.

It's pretty outrageous doing something other than space marines. Surely the right thing to do, would've been to buy more space marines and paint them yellow and red ala Imperial Double Fist??

Yeah how are we to believe this "2 month" story without evidence. I can't even get 16 Nomads painted and I've had them since December. :P

there would be pics, if these stupid useless apple crappintosh computers had some form of functionality or compatability going for them. As it is this dumb pile of massively overpriced crap cannot even run basic software for a full morning. Will have to figure out another way of taking pics from my phone onto here. STUPID computer wanker nerds that make this garbage.

LOL. No worries. Macs are like that. :P

Well done all the same. I struggle to put time aside for painting on a regular basis, so I take my hat off to anybody who has the diligence and discipline to do so. :-)
