New to the Forums

Postby RealbigGabriel » Wed Aug 26, 2015 1:49 pm

Hello all,

I'm new to the forums and wanted to post here in the hope that some kindly soul can point me in the right direction. Sorry for the long ramble and thank you if you bother to read all of this.

My (slightly abridged) life story: I used to play 40k (back from the start - Rogue Trader and more seriously from 2nd edition on - Blood Angels, Tyranids, Catachan Imperial Guard and Tzeentch Chaos Space Marines mainly). I got out of the hobby around 1999 when I went to university and didn't have the time for it. I also played Necromunda (Orlock and Ratskins) and Blood Bowl (Wood Elves) a lot. Throughout the time that I played, I always wanted to play WFB but my group wasn't interested in another "large" game since we all played 40k. I bought various incarnations of the WFB rules (2nd and 3rd edition (i think - may be mistaken) with the Magic supplement and various army books) but sadly never actually played the game.

In 2004, I found myself living in Scotland and visited a GW store to see what had happened in the time I'd been away. I ended up buying some Undead and painted up a few Vampires and a Necromancer, read up on the rules again but again never actually managed to play a game and soon fell out of the hobby.

I have always loved the lore of WFB, so I am somewhat conflicted about the release of AoS. As I understand it (not having followed ET or much of the "current lore" from the past decade or so), they have basically destroyed the Warhammer world and replaced it with something about "realms" and medieval space marines. So in a nutshell, I dislike the new lore and prefer to ignore it.

However, I really love the new rules. I don't have a problem with complicated games at all and I do miss certain things that made the older versions of WFB so cool (all the magic gear and spells, the way magic used to work) and I certainly get why many people are upset with the change, but for me - I think the rules are amazing. So simple, so quick and streamlined and it has completely motivated me to get into Warhammer (before it is gone for good).

I have brushed the dust off my old Undead and started to glue and paint and make scenery in earnest. I only have a very modest "skirmish-size" force and most of it is unpainted at the moment but I am hoping to complete it in the not too distant future. I have also bought a few dwarves so that I can ultimately have two small forces so that I can play this with my friends.

In the meantime though, and since it may take me some time for me to complete my small dwarf force and to make sufficient scenery for my ultimate objective of being to play this with my friends, I was hoping that someone could point me in the right direction for where I could play a casual (and smallish) game of AoS? I don't think I have been to Warzone. Is there a day when people play Warhammer casually or is it only tournaments that are scheduled events?

My undead army comes to about 18 points using the AzyrComp system posted on here. I am happy to play with the warzone house rules as well. Just looking to get in a game or two sometime.

There is a small group of people at Warzone that are enjoying AoS. Get in touch with Danie on this forum, he seems to be the AoS ringleader.

There have yet to be any local AoS tournaments, so all the games have been friendlies at the club(s).
Coprophilia - it's a dirty business, but at least it's better than staring at Dark Angel across the table.

PS, it's not AoS, it's correctly called

I have this disease called "Awesome".
You wouldn't understand because you don't have it.

Thanks guys. I will do that.

I'm not really competitive so tournaments are not my scene. Prefer either a narrative driven campaign or just a friendly.

I take it that neither of you are fans of the new rules.

The new rules are very polarizing, most of the old guard are.....put off while there is a groundswell of support from people such as yourself. Get ahold of Danie at Warzone and I think you will find what you are looking for
I spend most of my money on Warhammer and games, the rest is just wasted.
